First release devlog
I thought I would make a devlog for the recently released demo of my first game!
I feel that it's finally at a stable enough place to release it, and I plan on overhauling some systems and of course creating new ones, so I felt it was best to release it at this point before I go back in with a hammer and chisel and start breaking things (for the better of course).
But since this is the first release I would like to talk about some of what the game is and it's design. I wanted to take some of the perceived skills I have in writing, and apply them in a more engaging way, and there is also the fact that I've always enjoyed adult games, so I wanted to, essentially create my own ideal game, and that is where I've run into a bit of an issue. I am something of an idealist. I have quite lofty ideas about the game, and even about what I wanted to include in the demo that unfortunately didn't come to fruition. But despite that I'm quite happy. In certain ways I achieved more than I set out to do. When I started this project I did not have any programming experience, now I feel quite comfortable in my abilities. And I feel as though I've created a good base for what I want the future of this game to be.
So, let's talk a little bit about what shape the game is in right now. Right now there's an intro of sorts into the main storyline, you meet the frost witch, who's a powerful sorceress and one of the main source of woes for your character and others, as she has been taking prisoners and sending them down to find artifacts in an elven ruin. You don't get very far in the demo, but you do get far enough to get introduced to-
The tile map system. My game is text based, partially because I can draw about as well as a blind bat. But that also means it can be fatiguing and boring, there are certain things I've tried to do to combat this. The first being a relatively interactive way of having conversations and breaking up text. But also by creating a tile map system. You can move around and interact with the world around you, I have the ability to create new maps relatively easily, and over all, it's a pretty quick and powerful little system. (of course I've been the only one to use it so far). Right now there's only one map in the game, and it's a simple guest room, but I'm hopeful that the players have some fun walking around and fiddling with it.
There are a few other systems in the game. Such as a body part system. depending on which gender your character is they will have different body parts, I'll leave you to fill in the blanks on that one. But you can customize each part in regards to the stats of it, as well as descriptors of it. This system is modular, it's relatively easy for me to make different types of body parts, tentacles for example, and to slot them onto a certain character. The descriptor system is also, likewise modular. However frankly speaking right now it's a bit of a mess. This is mostly down to my rushed configuration of things, and some goofy options. It's not very much in play at the moment, which is why I haven't given it much time, but it's a good base for how I want to do things. And once I get feedback on what people want, it's very easy to configure.
The last big feature of this release, is the compendium! Right now it only displays quests, But I feel it's an important part of the game moving forward.
Ok I lied, there's one other big feature, the inventory handler. This is also under utilized at the moment, as it's designed to interface between two inventory managers, with both having potentially multiple containers, right now each of the two managers only has one container in them each. I don't know how well it's going to hold up, but for now in my testing it's been suspiciously stable and non item eating. It was kind of a rush job to be honest with you, and with the strange design I went with along with how quickly I coded it. I kind of hope it starts eating people's items for I can start bashing it back into shape instead of it just working... fine....
There's a few more bits and bobs but honestly I'm getting tired just writing this thing, I'm happy to finally release the demo for this game, and I hope you enjoyed reading or playing!
